The Many Faces of Piracy

This is a call for papers for a one-day conference centered around the theme of piracy and pirates, taken in the very broadest sense of the terms. The conference organizers seek papers from a wide variety of disciplines on topics such as, but not necessarily limited to: the Golden age of Piracy, contemporary piracy, Vikings, piracy in Asia, suppression of piracy, piracy and terrorism, pirates and treasure, technological piracy, software pirates and music piracy, the cultural impact of piracy, the invention of the “Hollywood pirate”, pirates and drugs, the connections between piracy and democracy, appropriation as piracy in art, pirates and technology at sea, pirates in literature, etc. Proposals may be for individual papers, sessions, or round table discussions. Graduate and advanced undergraduate papers will be considered, and special undergraduate sessions may be added to the program.

The conference will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008 at California University of Pennsylvania, a lush campus located south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This mini-conference is being held in conjunction with a three-day series of events on pirates and related themes being held at the university from 17-190 September, 2008. The programming includes chantey singing, weaponry demonstrations, academic lectures and book signings.

Proposals should be between 150-350 words in length, and should be received by August 15, 2008 to be considered. E-mail submissions are required,and should be sent to both of the following: Michael Slaven, slaven@cup.edu and Cindy Speer, speer@cup.edu.
